Zak Starkey's work with:
Artists United Against Apartheid

Zak, Little Steven and RingoArtists United Against Apartheid was Little Steven VanZandt's project to heighten awareness among performers, the public and governments about the Apartheid conditions in South Africa, as well as raise money (through the record's royalties) for The Africa Fund. According to the record sleeve, The Africa Fund was a charitable trust based in NYC, to benefit political prisoners & their families in South Africa, educational & cultural needs of South African exiles, and educational work of antiapartheid groups in the US.

It began with Steven's song "Sun City" - about the mega resort-hotel-casino-entertainment tourist mecca complex in Northwest South African. Many performing artists and sports figures were being paid big big tempting bucks to come and overlook the "situation" of black oppression and perform for the privileged. The message was to boycott not only Sun City, but all of South Africa on the economic, cultural, and sports-related fronts.

The title track features both Ringo Starr and Zak Starkey - father and son drum together for the first time here. They can be seen recording their bit in Startling Studios (Tittenhurst) for a few seconds in the music video released for the title track, and in "the making of" video.
