"Then, just when Townshend's twiddly tendencies
threaten to get a bit much, they bang out My Generation, reclaim Behind
Blue Eyes from its recent desecration at the hands of Limp Bizkit, and
promptly blow away most modern bands young enough to be their grandkids
with a punchy Won't Get Fooled Again.
To paraphrase that generational anthem, meet the new bosses, same as the old
bosses. The Who are still in charge." - The Telegraph - Blown Away
By The Windmilling Wizard, Craig McLean 24-3-2004

Won't Get Fooled Again was the last song with My Generation as the encore.

THE WHO perform TOMMY, plus guests!!
All proceeds will go towards building specialist hospital units and services
for teenagers with cancer
See the Teenage
Cancer Trust's pages
background: Pete in his Nov
13 2003 diary, announced that he spoke with Roger and that "we"
would definitely play on the day of this event. By "we" was unclear
if this includes the full band of regulars (Zak, Rabbit, etal) or just the
'new' Everyly Brothers format as he calls it!
In his Nov
27th diary posting, Pete points out that it isn't actually the
150th anniversary of the building (which wasn't completed until 1871), but
regardless, "we are playing there on March 29th 2004. Even if the RAH
is only 132 ..."
Turns
out that the band did NOT perform TOMMY as advertised, though the set did
feature the Tommy encore they were doing in 2002, and at the Forum 2004.
Set List: Who Are You, I Can't Explain, Substitute,
Anyway Anyhow Anywhere, Baba O'Riley, Behind Blue Eyes, 5:15, Sea and Sand,

- March 30, 2004 - Royal Albert Hall, Teenage Cancer
Trust Benefit
- The headliners for this night are The Stereophonics. However, they will
be joined that evening by a supergroup, which XFM
online (March 12) says will be called TRUST. Trust will be made
up of Noel and Liam Gallagher, Zak Starkey, Roger Daltrey, Paul Weller and
James Dean Bradfield (Manic Street Preachers), and Gem Archer (Oasis guitarist).
The Xfm article says vocal duties will be split among the participants, and
that Zak has "spent the last two days rehearsing with the band in a north
London studio. Full article at XFM: www.xfm.co.uk
The
NME online
reports the same bit, but goes on to say:
Not true, say the band's management. A statement
from the band reads: "Contrary to reports in the UK press today Oasis
will not be participating in this year's Teenage Cancer Trust concert at
the Royal Albert Hall."
"They have played the event in the past but although big supporters
of the TCT could not take part this year due to studio commitments. They
hope the event is as successful as it has been in previous years."
- NME online Mar 12, 2004
The
Sun online has a completely different take. After the same basic info
as the other reports they supply a 'quote' claimed as being from a band source
:
An
Oasis source said: Zak has been desperate to play with Oasis for a
while. Hes a big fan and theyre big BEATLES fans
so everyone is happy."
- Bizarre - The Sun 12 Mar, 2004
["desperate" ... oh puhleeeeze ... no wonder they
call this column Bizarre -- kv !]
Update: Although Paul Weller and Noel Gallagher were both on hand to
watch the Who gig the previous night, it seems Oasis' official denial of participation
was correct after all (imagine that!). No Gallaghers in the supergroup,
and no Starkey. The 'super' group that opened the show March 30th consisted
of Paul Weller who did the first four songs solo (and stayed for the entire
set), then was joined by James Dean Bradfield (Manic Street Preachers) and
Kelly Jones (Stereophonics). Roger Daltrey came out, as did Steve Gorman (Stereophonics)
for the last two songs - The Kids Are Alright and Magic Bus.
US Tour Dates
- Carnegie Hall - New York, NY - Weds May 19, 2004
- The
annual TV network's "upfront" presentations took place the week
of May 17th in New York City. Described as "four days of showmanship
and salesmanship designed to entice advertisers to buy, buy, buy commercial
time on the ... next season" (www.tvbarn.com), day three of the four
day event included CBS's presentation at Carnegie Hall. It featured words
from the network head (Les Moonves), a parody of other network's woes to the
tune of Beatle hits performed by the tribute band Fab Four, more talk, a comical
film short starring Dr. Phil as a bartender listening and advising some famous
people with troubles, followed by the business pitch for the new and returning
shows, and finally, the grand finale - THE WHO
The band performed a three song set: Who Are You, Baba O'Riley and Won't Get
Fooled Again at Carnegie Hall. All three CSI TV shows ( CSI, CSI:Miami and
CSI:NY ) now use Who songs as their themes. The set was filmed by CBS, and
there was, as Matt Kent describes on Pete's site, "an ecstatic (and,
as I said, surprised) audience."
As per tvbarn.com: "When it was over, the upfront was over. No more Les.
He knew better than to try and top that act, even with a goodbye."
- Tweeter Center - Mansfield, MA - Thurs May 20, 2004
- Priced $35.00 - $127.00. The Irish band Mr. North opened.
WOW!
A bit ragged in spots, but full of surprises and energy - an amazing overall
vibe, that featured the first really mixed up set list order in a long long
time, and truly new additions like Long Live Rock and Love Ain't
For Keeping! I can still feel the chills! I must say the sound was fantastic
- I could actually HEAR much of Pino, and Zak's drums (all of them finally!)
were crisp and clear and loud! Not to mention that he was totally on tonight.
Set List: Who Are You, Baba O'Riley, I Can't Explain,
Long Live Rock, Behind Blue Eyes, 5.15, Punk And The Godfather, Love Reign
O'er Me, Eminence Front, You Better You Bet, Real Good Looking Boy, Substitute,
Love Ain't For Keeping, Magic Bus, My Generation->The Kids Are Alright->
Old Red Wine (abbreviated), Won't Get Fooled Again
Encore: Pinball Wizard, Amazing Journey-> Sparks, See Me Feel Me ->Listening

- Madison Square Garden - New York City, NY - Saturday
May 22, 2004
- Priced $54.50 - $254.50 - David Johansen opened!
After
this event went on sale, there was a great deal of rumbling about how nothing
in the center two front sections made it to the public. On May 7th, we at
least found out who had some of them. From May 7th through May 17th, The Who,
through
Ticketmaster, auctioned off a limited number of specially-reserved Floor
seats. A portion of the proceeds from this event will benefit City of Hope.
[City of Hope is one of the world's leading research
and treatment centers for cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening
diseases. Named by U.S. News & World Report as one of America's best medical
centers for cancer treatment, City of Hope is a pioneer in the fields of bone
marrow transplantation and genetics.]
Minimum bid was for 2 or 4 tickets, at $300 per ticket (face was $254.54).
Tickets are bid by 'ticket group' with seats assigned after win. The groups
for this auction were 20 seats in Sec 2 & 3 - Row J (9th), 28 seats in
Sec 2 & 3 - Row K (10th), 44 seats in Sec 1, 2, 3, 4 - Row L (11th), and
4 seats in Sec 3 - Row M (12th).
Many
saw this performance as magical and unsurpassed, while others saw it as another
fine fine example of the all out, high energy shows that MSG seems to elicit
from the Who. Your perception may have depended upon where you were sitting!
Where I was, the sound is usually horrid, but this time it was actually decent.
I'm told that down in the sweet spots, it was the best many veterans have
ever heard (and after witnessing the huge improvement in Mansfield Thursday,
I believe them). The MSG Who gigs are always special. There is just something
about that venue, that audience and that band that combines for truly electrifying
results. From what I could assess from my vantage point, what made this show
so much more that the usual fare was the INTERACTION of Pete and Roger, as
well as Zak being totally and completely on fire.
The set list slipped back to nearly old form, but did have a few shuffles
and surprises. The biggest being the acoustic "Naked Eye" with just
Pete and Roger on guitars, and the additional spontaneous encore that had
Pete shouting for the band to return to the stage for a blistering Magic Bus
that he did not seem to want to stop! Trainwreck of the night award goes to
Eminence Front!
Set list: I Can't Explain, Substitute, Anyway
Anyhow Anywhere, Who Are You, Behind Blue Eyes, Baba O'Riley, 5.15, The Punk
And The Godfather, Love Reign O'er Me, Eminence Front, Drowned (PT solo acoustic),

- More East coast Dates possible?
- While much of the opening act rumors have been about the White Stripes,
another emerges with additional info - May 3rd, Blabbermouth.net
ran a blurb about the band Velvet Revolver being offered FOUR East Coast dates
with the Who in late May ... FOUR?! Philly has been a very very strong rumor,
especially since the stray advert on ticketmaster appeared for only a few
hours (minutes?) a while back. Velvet Revolver is a new band featuring x-Guns
& Roses and x-Stone Temple Pilots members. As it turns out, David Johansen
opened at Madison Square Garden, and Irish band Mr. North opened at Mansfield.

"The highlight for many at the festival was
The Who, who thrilled the crowd with a selection of their greatest hits
in a two-hour performance last night which was a throwback to the band's
legendary performance in 1970 - the last of the original Isle of Wight Festivals.
- Ananova
- Jun 13 2004
"Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend proved that, despite their age, they
are still as great as they were in their heyday.
Daltrey, 59, sounded like a man who had taken 30 years of his voice as Townshend
showed once again why he is a guitar legend." - The
Mirror Online - Jun 14 2004
"But, remarkably, no other act came close to the youth, energy, clarity,
and sheer genius of the Who. They just don't make them like that any more."

Australian Dates
The band returns to Australia for the first time since 1968! As stated in the
press release: "During their one and only January 1968 Australian tour,
The Big Show (alongside Paul Jones and The Small Faces), misbehaving, alcohol
and filthy' language got them police-escorted off a plane, banned from their
connecting flight, and grounded for hours. They swore they would never return.
And they didn't. Until now."
Promoter Michael Chugg even set up a special website for the event: www.whostouring.com.
When the news was originally posted on Pete's
site in the news section on April 8th, a total of six dates were listed
- July 28, 29 for Sydney, July 31, Aug 01, & 02 for Melbourne, and Aug 4
for Sydney again. Only the 28th and 31st gigs were being listed on whostouring.com,
the promoter's site, ads, and concert listings. The News posting on Pete's site
was later edited to list only the July 28 and July 31 shows. A second Sydney
