Zak Starkey with Ringo at:
|
![]() |
Organized by Mike Rutherford of Genesis, this event was for the benefit of
The White Lotus School, Ladakh - high in the Himalayas and cut off by snow for much of the year, now in its second phase, which provides an education which encompasses their all important culture, for the children of this remote area.
The Tibet House Trust - whose aims are to help in raising public awareness of the appalling oppression under which these gentle people of Tibet currently live, as well as providing for their basic needs.
The concerts featured various artists all performing BEATLES tunes! Performers included David Gilmour, Mike Rutherford, Roger Taylor, Lulu, Bob Geldof, Paul Carrack, Donovan, Gary Brooker, Kenney Jones, Damon Hill and others, and was mc'd by Chris Tarrant. The 'house band' was Mike Sanchez and his band.
The closing set was performed by none other than an actual Beatle - Ringo Starr!
Backing Ringo was a killer band consisting of:
Zak Starkey - drums
Bernie Marsden - guitar, vox
Ian McNabb - bass, vox
Peter Gordeno - keyboards/vox
Dave Caitlin-Birch - guitar/vox
The
band apparently rehearsed the day before in Zak's garage! Ian McNabb had posted
a diary account of the days surrounding the event found in the announcements
section at his official site - ianmcnabb.com.
